What are alley gates and why are they used?
They are large black metal gates that were put in to prevent burglaries. They have also been useful in helping to reduce other crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) in alleyways.
How do I request alley gates for my street?
Unfortunately, there are no plans to install any more alley gates. Funding for the scheme ended several years ago.
Who has access to alley gates?
Residents whose properties can be accessed through the gates, council and emergency services staff and contractors working on behalf of the council.

We ask for resident's support in ensuring day to day management of the alley gates.
Please shut your gates behind you, using your key to open and close them to prevent any damage and noise, and ensure that the drop bolt is placed into the receiver to keep the gates safely in the open position while you pass through.
Can alley gates be removed or relocated?
It is very rare for alley gates to be removed; some have been moved to accommodate later developments in the area.
What can I do if someone is misusing an alleyway?
If you are having any problems with crime and anti-social behaviour in your alleyway, you should report it to Merseyside Police or Crime stoppers UK. Incidents of anti-social behaviour can also be reported to the council's Community Safety Team.
How do alley gates help prevent crime and ASB?
They prevent access to people who are not your neighbours. The Community Safety Team monitor and issue keys to those who are entitled. Reducing the likelihood of fly tipping, anti-social behaviour and other unwanted behaviour in the space.
The Alley gates are made to the 'Secured By Design' Gold Standard, which is a UK Police scheme to 'design out' crime.
Are alley gates covered by CCTV?
Not intentionally. Some gates may be in view of the council's wider CCTV infrastructure.
