What is the Peasley Cross Roundabout Improvement Scheme?
The scheme is a £3.434 million investment to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity at Peasley Cross Roundabout through highway improvements, new crossings, cycle facilities, drainage upgrades and traffic signal improvements.
Why is the scheme needed?
The junction currently provides poor-quality facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling and acts as a barrier between local communities and key destinations. In addition, the carriageway and drainage infrastructure require significant improvement.
When will construction start?
Construction is expected to begin in late Summer 2026.
When will the scheme be completed?
The scheme is currently expected to be completed in late Spring 2027.
Why are the works being delivered in phases?
Peasley Cross Roundabout is one of the busiest junctions in the borough. Delivering the project in phases allows the Council and contractor to maintain access, manage traffic safely and minimise disruption throughout construction.
Will the roundabout remain open?
The intention is to keep the junction operational throughout the majority of construction works. Temporary traffic management, lane closures and traffic restrictions will be required at certain stages, but access will be maintained wherever possible.
Will there be road closures?
Some elements of the works may require temporary closures or restrictions. Details will be communicated in advance through the project website and other communication channels.
Will local businesses remain accessible?
Yes. Maintaining access to local businesses will remain a key consideration throughout construction, and the project team will continue to engage with affected businesses during delivery.

The scheme will deliver new accessible crossings, upgraded footways and safer routes through the junction, making it easier and safer for people to travel on foot.

How will cyclists benefit?
New cycle infrastructure and Toucan crossings will provide safer, more direct routes through the junction and improve connections to surrounding destinations.
Will motorists benefit?
Yes. The project includes full carriageway resurfacing, drainage improvements, upgraded road markings, new signage and improved traffic signal technology, all of which will benefit motorists.
Will public transport benefit?
Yes. The scheme includes a new bus stop on Peasley Cross Lane and improvements that will support better access to local bus services, and retail offer.
Who is funding the scheme?
The scheme is funded through:
- City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS).
- Department for Transport Active Travel Fund.
- Developer contribution.
- St Helens Borough Council match funding.
Can this funding be used elsewhere?
No. The majority of funding has been secured from external sources and is specifically allocated for this project. It cannot be redirected to unrelated services or maintenance programmes.
