St Helens Borough Council recognised as a leading fair employer
St Helens Borough Council has been officially recognised as one of the region's leading fair employers, achieving Accredited status under the Liverpool City Region Fair Employment Charter - a major milestone in its ongoing commitment to fair pay, secure work, and staff wellbeing.
Article date: 19 June 2025
Launched in 2021, the Charter celebrates employers who go above and beyond in treating their workforce fairly, offering secure jobs, paying a Real Living Wage, and providing an inclusive, healthy and supportive working environment.
St Helens Borough Council is one of just 11 employers across the Liverpool City Region to be awarded Accredited Level, the highest recognition in the Charter.
This achievement highlights the council's efforts to lead by example - ensuring fair terms and conditions for its workforce, actively supporting trade union engagement, offering progression and training opportunities for young people, and embedding best practices in areas such as equality, mental health support, and family-friendly working.
On accepting the award, Councillor Keith Laird, St Helens Borough Council's Cabinet Member for People, Performance and IT, commented: "We're proud to be at the forefront of fair employment in our region. Achieving Accredited status in the Fair Employment Charter recognises the high standards we hold ourselves to as an employer - treating our workforce with the fairness, respect and support they deserve.
"As one of the largest employers in the borough, we know how important it is to set a positive example - and we'll continue to work under the 'with you, for you' ethos for residents to make St Helens Borough a great place to live, work and thrive."
St Helens Borough Council Leader, Anthony Burns, said:
"This accreditation is a powerful endorsement of the values we live by at St Helens Borough Council. Fairness, respect and opportunity are at the heart of everything we do - not just for our staff, but for our whole community.
"Being recognised as a leading fair employer is a testament to the hard work of our teams and the strong partnership we've built with our workforce. We're proud to lead by example and determined to keep pushing for better standards and better outcomes for everyone in our borough."
Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:
"I've always believed that a hard day's work deserves a fair day's pay. No one should be stuck in a job that doesn't pay the bills or lets you down when you need security most.
"Our Fair Employment Charter is helping to turn that belief into reality - lifting pay, improving conditions, and creating real opportunities for people across our region.
"We're not interested in box-ticking or gimmicks. This is about backing the good employers, helping others raise their game, and making our region a fairer, better place to live and work.
"If you're an employer who shares those values, I'd encourage you to sign up and be part of the movement for better work in our region."
The Charter currently covers 108,920 workers out of the city region's 642,500-strong workforce.
