Council calls on parents and carers to check children's MMR vaccination status, amid rise in measles cases locally

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can lead to serious health complications, especially for babies, young children, and pregnant women. With a growing number of cases locally, public health officials are emphasising the importance of vaccination as the most effective way to protect against the disease.

Councillor Andy Bowden, St Helens Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care & Health, said:

"Measles is not a mild illness - it can lead to serious complications and, in some cases, long-term health problems. Vaccination remains our most safest and effective protection. Just two doses of the MMR vaccine provide lifelong immunity, and we urge all parents and carers to check their child's vaccination status today. If you're unsure, contact your GP or check your child's red book.

"A simple vaccine could save your child's life — don't leave it to chance."

Symptoms of measles usually start with cold-like signs such as a runny nose, sneezing, cough, sore eyes, and a high temperature. A red, blotchy rash typically appears a few days later, starting on the face and behind the ears before spreading across the body. White spots inside the mouth may also occur.

If you suspect your child has measles:

  • Phone your GP or NHS 111 for advice.
  • Do not go directly to your GP practice as measles is highly infectious
  • Do not send them to school, nursery or a childcare setting

Routine immunisations are also available in locations across the borough via the Living Well Bus. For an upcoming timetable, please visit: The Living Well Service: Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust
