The Bereavement Services team at St Helens Borough Council have been shortlisted for the Cemetery of the Year Award and hope to bring in Gold in recognition for the high-quality bereavement support they deliver throughout the year to families.

Councillor Trisha Long, Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said: "In my Cabinet role as well as personally, I have seen first hand the dedication and commitment of our Bereavement Team in providing a service of the highest quality and with enormous compassion to support our residents at an incredibly difficult time.

"The team have achieved a Silver award for the last five years at this prestigious event. This year we hope that through the investments the council and the communities who support our crematorium and cemetery space in Windle have made, alongside the Community Green Flag for the memorial gardens within the grounds at St Helens Cemetery and Crematorium, maintained with thanks to the hard work of the wonderful volunteers at the Friends of St Helens Cemetery, will help turn that silver into greatly deserved Gold."

The Cemetery of the Year Awards Competition is designed to improve standards within burial grounds and encourage best practice with information and support from leading burial authority organisations.

The Cemetery of the Year Award is supported and endorsed by leading industry Associations, including the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM), the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA), the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC), and the British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons (BRAMM).

The winners will be announced in October.
