Welcoming Tonga to our community

We're delighted to be hosting the Tonga men's national team in St Helens for the Rugby League World Cup 2021 and arranged a programme of community events with them during the tournament.

This included a civic reception for the squad at St Helens Town Hall on the evening of Tuesday 11 October, to which every amateur club in the borough was invited.

Players visited primary schools across the borough on 11 October, with secondary schools and amateur clubs also meeting the squad.

Portico Vine event - 16 October

Portico Vine ARLFC organised an event to celebrate and learn more about the heritage, culture, traditions, food and lifestyle of Tongans.

Taking place at the club on Sunday 16 October, it was part of their community welcome to the Tonga team and its people during their build-up to and celebration of the Rugby League World Cup, and the legacy they know will be left behind, particularly in St Helens.

Players from the club were among the mascots and flag bearers at the Tonga vs Papua New Guinea game on Tuesday 18 October at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
