Aluminium Recycling

Aluminium Recycling Guidance:

Please recycle your aluminium in your white recycling bag.

Aluminium items you can recycle:

Foil-based:

Foil trays (e.g. takeaway containers) - please rinse these to ensure no food remains in the tray (these can still be recycled if not squeaky clean) and recycle in your white bag.

Kitchen/cooking-foil - please rinse these to ensure no food remains (these can still be recycled if not squeaky clean). Then scrunch together with other pieces of foil to make a tennis-ball sized ball and recycle in your white bag.

Aluminium foil lidding, e.g. yoghurt, Actimel lids, pet food lids - please rinse these off and collect with other foil items, scrunching them together to make a ball (the size of a tennis ball) and recycle in your white bag.

Chocolate foil - Must be free from food, a quick wipe or rinse will do. Then scrunch together with other pieces of foil to make a ball (about the size of a tennis ball) and pop in your white recycling bag.

Non-foil-based:

Drink cans - please empty the can first - recycle in white recycling bag.

Aerosols - please ensure the container is empty before recycling - recycle in white recycling bag.

Bottle tops - e.g. wine bottles, olive oil bottles - ensure lid is empty - recycle in white recycling bag.

Aluminium tubes - e.g. tomato puree, cosmetics - Squeeze or roll the tube until it's as empty as possible, then recycle in your white recycling bag.

Scrunch it!

The best way to tell if something is made from aluminium is to do the SCRUNCH TEST.

Scrunch the item into a ball in the palm of your hand and then open your hand.

If it stays scrunched in a ball, it's aluminium.

If it springs back, it's made from plastic.

Don't be Foiled!

Many cheeky products, jealous of aluminium's infinite recyclability, disguise themselves as aluminium... but don't be foiled! Some of these products do contain foil but it's bonded to other materials such as paper or plastic which means that it CAN'T be easily recycled in the UK at the moment. Please DO NOT recycle these products with your other foil packaging, they include:

  • Medicine blister packs,
  •  Crisp packets
  • Baby and pet food pouches
  • Drinks pouches
  • Butter wraps
  • Some chocolate wrappers
