Please note:
The above dates are subject to such items as weather conditions and times and dates maybe revised due to unforeseen circumstances.
Roads will be closed at M6 J22, overnight from 21:00 hrs to 06:00hrs, unless otherwise specified.
The above table will be updated at regular intervals, where applicable.
The link provided for the location is approximate and the working area will vary in each of the above scenarios. All users of the route should adhere to the traffic signs and temporary traffic management in place at that time. You can find more information on our Roadworks page.
For works associated with the smart motorways, being undertaken by National Highways, refer to the National Highways Website.
The above table details the proposed closures in place for the M6 J22. Working alongside the Smart Motorways project, the scheme has endeavoured to combined traffic management to reduce, as much as feasibly possible, the impact the works has on the network:
Background
The Parkside project is a joint venture between commercial property developers Langtree and St Helens Borough Council, transforming the derelict Parkside Colliery site located on the south-eastern edge of Newton-le-Willows, into a new employment park.
The new link road, funded by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, will help unlock the former Parkside Colliery site for development, delivering much-needed investment, jobs, infrastructure and training opportunities for residents and communities in Newton-le-Willows and the surrounding areas. This enhanced highway access between the M6 and local road networks and the new Parkside development will divert goods traffic away from the A49 and residential areas, improving connectivity for commuters and helping to lower local environmental concerns.Freight Strategy
For users of the proposed Parkside Development, HGVs etc, referred to as 'Freight', will have specific road signs to direct them to use main routes. This will be implemented as part of the construction works for the new road.

Works are now substantially complete on the main aspect of the PLR Scheme. Minor works are currently being undertaken to complete ducting and drainage works.
In line with the planning conditions set upon the scheme, the main scheme cannot be utilised by traffic until the mitigation junctions are completed, which are detailed below:
Junction Mitigation Schemes
As part of the PLR Planning Application, and reviewed in the Transport Assessment, traffic flows at nine junctions in the vicinity of the main PLR scheme were studied. As a result of the adjustment in Traffic flows once the PLR is open, there are three junctions which required upgrades.
- A572 Southworth Road/A573 Parkside Road
- A49 Mill Lane/A572 Southworth Road
- M6 Junction 22
Works to the A572 Southworth Road/A573 Parkside Road and A49 Mill Lane/A572 Southworth Road are completed. In regards to the M6 J22 Scheme, we can now provide an update on this scheme:
- The scheme will be substantially complete on 19th December with reduced traffic management present on the highway.
- During the Christmas 2024 Period, the permanent traffic signals will remain switched off and appropriate signage will be placed on site. During this period the junction will operate as a standard roundabout setup and the road markings/destinations are provided below for reference.
- On 6th & 7th January 2024 the permanent traffic signals will be commissioned and switched on. This will then result in the junction to operate as a signalised roundabout.
- Further minor works are required beyond this date but minimal traffic management will remain in place.
