Things to think about before applying for an apprenticeship
What makes a good apprentice?
You should:
- be aged 16 or over
- have English and maths GCSEs at grade 4 or above (desirable not essential as this can be gained alongside your apprenticeship)
- motivated to work
- unemployed.
Who can start an apprenticeship?
To start an apprenticeship, you'll need to be:
- 16 or over
- living in England
- not in full-time education (you can apply for an apprenticeship while you're still at school but you'll need to be 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays to start the apprenticeship).
Do your research
Before you apply, research the job role to gain an understanding of what the role undertakes and the job's specifics.
Show your understanding
Evidence you're understanding and knowledge when completing your application form.
Read and review the job description
Always read the job description before you start completing the application form. This will tell you a lot about the role you are applying for and will help you when completing the application form.
Give yourself time
Check the closing date for the application form and give yourself plenty of time to complete your application to prevent mistakes.
Complete all sections
- Answer all questions and fill all boxes/spaces
- Explain any gaps in your employment history. If you've never had a job, include examples like voluntary work, work experience or involvement with clubs or hobbies.
Be your own best advocate
Promote your skills, including those developed outside work, like hobbies and interests.
Save a copy if you can
Before submitting, make a copy for future reference, it will be useful if you're invited for an interview. Or when applying for other vacancies.
Get a second opinion
Ask a friend or relative to review your application form before submission.
