The full board, which is being chaired by local businessman Chris Hickey, met for the first time after a recruitment process to appoint community members.

Councillor Anthony Burns, Leader of St Helens Borough Council, said: "We were delighted to finally come together as a board to start the serious work of drawing up exciting plans that could bring in this huge amount of investment for Newton-le-Willows. The passion that the board bring to this project is a real testament to the community and I'm sure that working together we will create a robust plan that will bring benefits for not just Newton-le-Willows but St Helens Borough as a whole."

Earlier this year the Government announced that Newton-le-Willows would be eligible for up to £20million in funding as part of the Long-Term Plan for Towns. Now it is the role of the Newton-le-Willows Town Board to draw up a Long-Term Plan for how that money could be invested in the area.

The board is drawn up from local representatives including Councillor Anthony Burns, the Leader of St Helens Borough Council and Councillor Richard McCauley, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Growth and Regeneration. They are joined by David Baines, St Helens North MP, representatives from Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioners Office and Merseyside Police.

The remaining members of the board include two community representatives who are Alex Myhill from Riddling Rack and Joanne Edge from Newton Sports Club; Debbie Taylor from Es Paradis Salon and Domestic Abuse WA12 CIC and Paul Romanko from United Utilities will act as business representatives; Fiona Ruddy from Newton Community Centre is the representative for the third sector; John Unsworth from Sea Cadet Corps is the cultural, arts and heritage representative; and finally, Rev Chris Stafford, who is Team Rector at St Peters, Emmanual Wargrave and St John's, is the faith representative.

Chair Chris Hickey added: "The board is a really strong mix of people from the area who are already heavily invested in making Newton-le-Willows a community that people are proud to live, work and invest in. Our first meeting showed the strength of desire to get the most out of this opportunity to bring in £20 million into the area."
