Free road closures for VE Day street parties
To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe), St Helens Borough Council is offering free road closures for residents wishing to host a street party.

Article date: 26 March 2025
Held on Thursday 8 May, VE Day commemorates Germany's surrender to the Allies in 1945, bringing an end to the Second World War in Europe.
As is tradition with significant national events, street parties have become a popular and meaningful tradition, offering neighbours the opportunity to unite over food, drink and entertainment - with such commemorations held across the borough on that momentous day back in 1945 to celebrate the end of just over six-years of war on the continent.
Mayor of St Helens Borough Council, Jeanette Banks, said: "We are delighted to offer residents the chance to mirror the jubilant scenes of yesteryear and commemorate this significant anniversary with a street party. It's a wonderful opportunity for neighbours to come together, celebrate our values and promote community spirit."
Applications are welcome for the day itself [Thursday 8 May] or over the early May Bank Holiday weekend [3-5 May]
The deadline to apply for a road closure is Friday 11 April 2025.
