Organised by St Helens Borough Council, the event offers a unique opportunity for the community to walk, jog, or run the full 2-kilometre stretch of road before it opens to vehicles later in May, with goodies on offer for those who take part.

The new link road, funded in partnership between the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and St Helens Borough Council, will help unlock the former Parkside Colliery site for development, delivering much-needed investment, jobs, infrastructure and training opportunities for residents and communities in Newton-le-Willows and the surrounding areas. It will also divert goods traffic away from the A49 and residential areas, while also improving connectivity for commuters and helping to lower local environmental concerns.

Councillor Seve Gomez Aspron, Deputy Leader of St Helens Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment, said:

"This is a chance for local people to see firsthand the scale of investment that's gone into transforming connectivity in Newton-le-Willows and the wider borough.

"Parkside Link Road West is a vital piece of infrastructure that will unlock the full potential of Parkside — bringing new jobs, investment, and economic growth to our communities. It's exciting to mark this milestone with an event that's all about community."

As onsite parking will be unavailable, local residents are encouraged to walk to the event, if possible, via Mill Lane/Winwick Road A49 - with a small shuttle bus service available from Earlestown Bus Station, Newton-le-Willows Health & Fitness, High Street/Rob Lane bus stop and Newton-le-Willows Railway Station from 11:10am that morning to take visitors to and from the link road.

The community event will take place on Saturday 17 May between 12:00pm-2:00pm, with the road expected to be fully open at the end of May 2025.

Although this is a free event, visitors are asked to register their attendance by visiting: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/parkside-link-road-community-event-fun-runwalk-tickets-1342102467609?aff=oddtdtcreator  where the full shuttle bus timetable is also available for those who require the service.
