Jobs boost for St Helens Borough with delivery of high-tech machinery to SINA Medical Glass

St Helens Borough will benefit from a jobs boost after the delivery of two high-tech machines to SINA Medical Glass. The delivery marks a major milestone in the development a new modern medical glass manufacturing facility located at the Life Science Innovation Zone in St Helens. This is the first phase in the creation of the state-of-the-art facility that is expected to deliver around 180 skilled jobs over the next few years.

SINA Medical Glass is receiving £5.5 million as part of the St Helens Town Deal with support from Glass Futures and shareholding partners SGC Group Intl Limited and Hambleden Capital.

The project, which has already completed the refitting of a former distribution warehouse, represents a major step forward in establishing the Borough as a leading Life Science Manufacturing Hub.

Glass vials and cartridges play a vital role in the pharmaceutical industry. They are primarily used to store and transport liquids such as vaccines and injectable medicines. The SINA Medical Glass site in St Helens site will eventually have the capacity to manufacture circa 300 million glass containers a year, enough to meet the UK's domestic demand of 150-200 million annually with the surplus to be exported to meet global demand.  Ultimately SINA has the ambition to build a borosilicate tubing plant on the same St Helens site.

SINA is currently recruiting and will work closely with Glass Futures and local employment and training providers to ensure that local residents are supported into accessing theses high value roles. In addition, SINA will also be looking to offer apprenticeships and supported placements to allow people to access in-work training and development opportunities.

Councillor Kate Groucutt, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business and Inclusive Growth, said:

"With our proud history in glass-making, it is fantastic to see the arrival of the first machinery at SINA Medical Glass. As well as providing high quality jobs, apprenticeships and placements for local residents, the business will be contributing in a unique way to the UK economy through the production of a vital element of our pharmaceutical and life sciences industry. This is a proud moment for St Helens Borough and a clear sign of progress in our local economic development. "

Walter Coxon, Director, SINA Medical Glass said:

"We are very pleased with the progress we have made in setting up the SINA Medical Glass facility and very grateful for the support from the St Helens Borough Council and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority in getting us to this stage. We look forward to the build-up to full production at the site, both in delivering new jobs to the community and ensuring security of UK supply for medical glass packaging."
