Work has begun to transform 4-6 Hardshaw Street in St Helens town centre into a dedicated careers hub for people eager to explore opportunities in health and care. A highly-skilled team of experts will provide free advice on CVs and job applications, immersive training sessions, and access to real work placements - making the hub a one-stop career shop.
Funded through a £1.3 million investment from the national Town Deal Fund, the ambitious project is being delivered in partnership between Mersey and West Lancashire NHS Trust and St Helens Borough Council as part of the St Helens Cares place-based partnership.
Councillor Andy Bowden, St Helens Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said:
"Health and care are some of the most important and rewarding career paths in our borough. Adult social care accounts for the biggest single area of the council's overall budget, and we take that responsibility seriously. That's why we're proud to have recently been rated 'Good' by the CQC - and this new health and care careers hub will build on that success by giving local people the opportunity, confidence, and support they need to step into these vital roles and thrive. We're not just helping people into work - we're strengthening the entire care sector for the future, as a council working with you, for you."
Councillor Kate Groucutt, Deputy Leader of St Helens Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Business and Inclusive Growth, added: "This is a fantastic investment through the Town Deal that shows what can be achieved when we back ambitious, people-focused projects. By creating jobs and supporting careers in one of our most vital industries - health and social care - this new hub will have a lasting impact on the residents supported, as well as the future growth and wellbeing of the entire borough."
Wayne Longshaw, Director of Integration at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: "This is a really exciting project. Providing 5 Star Patient Care to our community for years to come means recruiting and training the best and brightest, and our hope is that this centre will help launch exciting health and care careers for countless local people."
The building design and refurbishment is being undertaken by Merseyside-based local companies, Ellis Williams Architects; Hive Projects, I.E.D Group and Steven Hunt & Associates, with the new centre expected to open later this year.
