Assistant Director of Regeneration and Economic Development

Salary: £90,567 - £94,862 per annum

Opportunities to shape the future of St Helens Borough

We are seeking an Assistant Director of Regeneration and Economic Development to lead the strategic direction of our growth agenda - from major town centre regeneration and investment strategies to business support, skills development, and economic inclusion. This is a pivotal role for a forward‑thinking leader who can bring partners together, inspire teams, and turn bold plans into tangible outcomes.

You will work with a number of programme managers to lead delivery of our flagship regeneration programmes, including the transformation of town centres and our Pride in Place initiatives. These roles offer the chance to manage high‑profile, complex programmes that will redefine the borough's identity, strengthen local pride, and create places where people want to live, work, visit, and invest.

Together, these posts form a critical part of our Strategic Growth Department - a team at the forefront of shaping a stronger, greener, more prosperous St Helens. If you want to make a visible impact and be part of a borough that is genuinely on the move, this is the moment to join us.

Our Strategic Growth Department

The Strategic Growth Department is at the heart of St Helens Borough Council's ambition to transform the borough and build a thriving, sustainable future. It brings together the teams responsible for driving economic development, regeneration, planning, housing growth, transport, and place‑shaping. The department leads on delivering the council's long‑term vision for a stronger, more inclusive economy and vibrant, well‑connected places across the borough.

Working closely with partners, investors, developers, and local communities, the department oversees major regeneration programmes - including the transformation of St Helens and Earlestown town centres - as well as strategic housing delivery, employment land development, and infrastructure planning. It plays a key role in attracting investment, supporting business growth, and ensuring that new development aligns with the borough's priorities around sustainability, heritage, and community wellbeing.

The department leads on strategic planning and policy, ensuring the borough has a clear framework for growth that supports high‑quality design, environmental responsibility, and long‑term resilience. By coordinating transport strategy, economic initiatives, and place‑based regeneration, the Strategic Growth Department helps create the conditions for new jobs, improved connectivity, and better opportunities for residents. It is a forward‑looking, collaborative service that sits at the centre of the council's ambition to shape a prosperous future for St Helens Borough.
