The closure has been confirmed after the owners of the site, Peter Street Community Centre, decided to hire the space out to another organisation. This due to the site's need to secure long term sustainable income to support its running costs.

The last operating day for Peter Street Library will be Friday 31st March 2023, after which time the nearest library will be St Helens Library, located at The World of Glass.

St Helens Library Service also offers a complete online borrowing service, with a wide range of e-books and audiobooks, digital magazines, and newspapers, all accessible using your library card number. Library members can use any library in the Borough but will also be able to return items to the Peter Street Centre up to 30th May 2023 as a deposit box will be in reception. The library staff will move to other libraries.

The timing of the closure has been made in the best interests of the building owners, and the council is now working with them to accommodate this.

There is also the Library Light scheme, which gives existing customers access to all libraries across the Liverpool City Region with their current library card.
