Simpler Recycling

What is Simpler Recycling?

Introduced in 2023 by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), Simpler Recycling was brought in to help make bin day easier, by ending the confusion of what can and can't be recycled. So What does this mean for your business?

By 31st March 2025, all businesses and relevant non-domestic premises with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees must separate paper, card, plastic, metal, aluminium, glass bottles and food waste from general waste, saving valuable resources from going to waste and supporting the circular economy in the UK.

This applies to all businesses and other non-household premises, such as schools and hospitals with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees, regardless of how many employees are on site at one time. For example, if your business has five locations with only two full-time equivalent employees based at each, you will still be required to implement the Simpler Recycling regulations.

Timelines for your business
From 31st March 2025 - 10 or more full-time equivalent employeesFrom 31st March 2027 - 9 or less full-time equivalent employees
Businesses and relevant non-domestic premises in England with 10 or more full-time equivalent employees, will need to arrange for the collection of the core recyclable waste streams, with the exception of garden waste which includes glass, metal, plastic, paper and card, and food waste.Businesses with 9 or less full-time equivalent employees will need to introduce the simpler recycling. At this point everyone (domestic & non domestic) will also need to separate plastic film, packaging, and bags.

What do I need to do from 31st March 2025?
- You will need to start separating dry recyclable materials (paper, card, plastic, metal, aluminium, and glass bottles) from your general waste.

- Your food must be separated from general waste and collected separately.
