Ready for Reception

In St Helens we believe that children's transition into Reception is one of the most significant steps in their early education, and the foundations for a confident start are built long before they enter the reception classroom. A child's sense of security, curiosity, and readiness develops through their earliest relationships, the language-rich interactions they experience at home or in as setting, and the opportunities they have to explore, play, and make sense of the world. Long before formal schooling begins, children are already learning how to communicate, manage their emotions, solve problems, and build independence — all of which shape how they approach new environments and challenges.

By the time they reach Reception, children bring with them a unique blend of experiences, strengths, and needs. When early years settings, families, and schools work together to nurture these foundations, the transition becomes not just a move to a new classroom, but a positive step in a child's learning journey where they feel understood, supported, and ready to thrive

Starting Reception UK is an online resource designed to help parents and carers understand what to expect when their child begins Reception. It brings together simple guidance, practical tips, and supportive information about early learning, routines, and school readiness. It's created for families with children aged 4-5 years, as well as anyone supporting a child's transition into primary school, making the start of their education feel smoother and build childrens confidence.

Starting Reception have also provided guides for Potty Training and Children's Toothbrushing. Children being able to use the toilet independently and having healthy routines such as brushing their teeth is an important part of getting ready for starting school.
