What is Supported Housing?
Supported housing provides accommodation along with support to help people live independently within the community.
Providers will give short- to medium-term help so that people can:

- Stabilise their situation
- Develop independent living skills
- Improve their wellbeing
- Move towards more permanent housing when ready
Supported housing can help a range of people, including:
- People experiencing homelessness
- Young people
- Families who need additional support
- People fleeing domestic abuse
- People with health, wellbeing or support needs
The Supported Housing Hub does not provide accommodation directly. Instead, we assess needs, coordinate access to supported housing and work with providers to ensure services are safe, effective and high quality.
Supported Housing and Specified Accommodation
Some supported housing is classed as specified accommodation for Housing Benefit purposes.
Specified accommodation is a legal term used to describe certain types of accommodation where special Housing Benefit rules apply. This includes:
- Supported exempt accommodation
- Managed properties
- Domestic violence refuges
- Local authority hostels
If you live in this type of accommodation, you may need to claim Housing Benefit to help with your rent. Your landlord or support provider should assist you with this process.
Some people may prefer to remain in their own home rather than move into supported accommodation. Support may still be available depending on your circumstances.
